Any kinds of certificates from social organizations you have worked for, certificates of achievement etc. are also useful in helping admissions officers in making up their minds whether you are the kind of student that they want studying in their university.
The service provided by Eden is considerable. I found the staffs are very friendly and co-operative. Rebu Ma'am helped me a lot and supported me. The thing I liked most was the pre-visa confidence boost-up. No comments about the service provided by Eden. Though there were little mistake but that is not only of Eden but also mine too. So, let it be (song of Brittles). The counseling department has been so cooperative towards me. So, thank you a lot from the bottom of my heart. I feel great to be part of Eden family. It has helped me a lot to reach to my destination. But somewhere I felt that the personnel attention that a student should get is not up to the mark. But I am highly influenced by the counseling department. Being in the Australia was my dream. Eden made this dream turn to reality. Eden was always supportive to us, may it be in selecting the university, state or even the course that best suits us. I can never erase the image of all the helpful staffs and even the caring junior staffs who have directly or indirectly helped me to reach my destination. After completing my HSEB, I joined this institution for abroad studies counseling & documentation and I have prepared all my necessary documents according to the counselor’s advice. And I have found the institution much good on its service I am very glad to be the part of IIBIT which made really possible by Eden. If I wouldn't have come here then it would not be possible. The teachers of Eden ides ended me great support. The teachers really helped me to be the part of Eden as well as IIBIT.
Thank you very much Eden.

Visa Interview Preparation
- intricacies of deciding which category of visa to apply for,
- Attachments and credentials to be attached
- Paperwork to be done
- Attestations, forms and documents required
- Financial documentation and proofs, bank statements, loan paperwork etc required.
With the documentation taken care of, you can concentrate on the important task of facing the interview. After all, your chance at getting the education you desire and are eligible for hinges on getting the visa. You deserve to be able to get the all-important ticket without the accompanying distress. We will take the bulk of the distress of your shoulders and let you revel in the delight of getting the permission to enter the country and leave your mark. The Admission process has been so draining that you are almost at the end of your tether emotionally, physically and mentally when the day which you have been awaiting for a long time finally dawns. You have cleared the preliminary hurdles, are short-listed, have evaded the numerous piles of the 'rejected' applications and have received an interview call. We feel jubilant, but the euphoria is edged with panic and gives way eventually to a serious attack of nervousness. This is especially true for students who have no prior professional experience and have never faced the interview board. The interview is crucial in the admission process:
- It is the committee's first meeting with the candidate. The board gets a feel of the personality behind the paperwork they have read and assessed so far.
- It is golden opportunity to put his best foot forward and in the door for the student. He can avail of this chance to press home his advantages, clear the doubts, answer queries and leave a favorable impression in person.
- There is many a slip between the cup and the lip in the entire admissions process. The fact that the candidate has made it this far is a definite encouraging factor and it is a perfect occasion for him to convey his enthusiasm, suitability, adaptability and fervor for admission to the very people who have the power to decide.
- Sometimes, even the most powerful documentation and strong admission packaging is rendered useless when the committee meets with the candidate and finds him lacking. This could be for reasons as inane and simple as his ignorance of simple knowledge such as do and don'ts of interviews, deportment issues or monosyllabic answers. At Access, informed, sensitive and customized guidance at the interview stage:
- Reduces the candidate's anxiety, allays his fears and provides much needed encouragement.
- Apprises the candidate of the admission committee's expectations, concerns and approach, thus providing him a crucial insight into his audience's minds and hearts.
- Covers every nuance of the interview process conclusively as the candidate is made to respond to expected questions. Expert assessment of his performance follows and tips and vital information is provided. These mock interview sessions are extremely helpful I eliminating nervousness and enhancing confidence.
- The aspects of the student profile, instances inviting comment in his admission package like essays, Statement of purpose, community service etc are meticulously discussed so that there is no chance of the candidate to be caught of guard or on the wrong foot.
- Guidance is provided from everything from what to expect to how to dress, to how to enter, telephone etiquette (if the interview is to be telephonic) to making a graceful exit.
The candidate has the chance in the interview to walk into the spotlight and steal the show. All he needs is the right approach, direction and guidance. The reward is the admission acceptance envelope. Let the applause begin.

A well-written, arresting and strong statement of purpose can effectively communicate your passion and strong motivation for higher education. This can be the clincher as far as your prospects of admission are concerned, being one of the significant points which swing the committee in a student's favor.
(I) Letter of Recommendation
The Admissions committee is composed of academicians, faculty, alumni and other senior staff of a college or university. In their primary capacity of being educators, they hold the opinions, evaluation and expectations of another colleague in high esteem. That is exactly why a letter of recommendation from a colleague holds such value. A good recommendation helps you to reach your shortlist universities fast.
- There can be no better judge, sincere appreciator or unbiased critic of an applicant's caliber than his immediate supervisor or client for GMAT.
- Similarly for GRE a good recommender is the professor or guide.
A letter of recommendation has within its purview not only the assessment of the intellectual, academic and scholarly intent and capacity of the student but also covers the gamut of his entire personality, interests, general behavior in and outside the classroom, attitude, approach and preparation for higher studies. Eden addresses a student in an individual capacity and also compare him/her with peers to present a relative picture of his/her merits and suitability for pursuing the rigors of higher studies. At Access, we help you to procure letters that will meet the above criteria by:
- Advising the student on whom to contact, when to contact for the most effective letter.
- We help you determine the right approach, present the right information which will help your case and get the maximum out of a letter since the student is often too embarrassed, overawed or plain uncomfortable about approaching their employers or teachers for the letters.
- We help evaluating the quality of a letter and its ultimate impact and help you and your recommender make the letter more effective, complimentary and useful.
The student's admission can be hampered or hastened by a letter of recommendation. It is important that these documents be very positive, comprehensive and in sync with your overall admission package deal, to click your universities choice. Your recommender must be able to present your strengths and skills in an original and honest but realistic way. This should be in harmony with your academic and career goals as stated in your SOP or essays. The letter could have been written by your teacher or your employer, but it is vital that it endorse your candidature strongly and make a case for your intellectual and academic proficiency.
(II) Essays
Its reasonable to assume that a person's intellectual, perceptional and personality development have reached a mature stage when he/ she reaches the age to apply for admission to a school, college and university of their choice. Their life thus far has been replete with experiences, anecdotes, revelations, realizations and wonderful instances. The Admission Committees want to get a peek into these memories, learning and assimilated experiences. That is why admissions essays are prescribed by most universities covering a range of questions relating to various aspects of an individual's personality. Most of the colleges will also require you to submit an essay about yourself. These essays should contain your brief autobiography, an insight into what kind of person you are, your reasons for choosing your course, your career objectives and amusing anecdote that give an insight into what kind of person you are. We will guide our student about writing yourself for scholarship.

How much does it cost to study in Canada?
Note: All amounts are in Canadian dollars. Students must request precise tuition amounts from the institution they wish to attend. The range of tuition fees shown below is for eight months of study (a normal academic year) and does not include incidental fees that might be required to complete registration.
Approximate University undergraduate fees for international students:
Graduate student fees vary greatly depending on the program and province of study. Most provinces charge higher fees for international students (known as differential fees), and some offer a limited number of exemptions from the higher fees.
Reasons to Study in Canada
- The United Nations ranked Canada as the best place in the world to be alive! This assessment was based upon Canada's achievements in terms of educational attainment, life expectancy, national income and general quality of life. It also included Canada's abundance of fresh water, comfortable population density, low incidence of violent crime and a health care system that is a model for the world.
- Canada's education system is admirable and ranks among the best in the world. Moreover Canadian tuition fees are among the lowest in English-speaking countries.
- Internationally recognized degrees. Canada boasts a wide range of quality educational institutions for both degrees and diplomas in technical and professional disciplines. Over 106,000 international students attend Canadian colleges and universities. This means that you can meet people from around the world as well as people from your own country.
- Possibility to work in Canada after graduation. International students who have graduated from a Canadian university or college have the opportunity to work in Canada for up to one year after they receive their degree or diploma. International students can work on campus without a work permit. Plans are being made to allow international students to work off-campus, too.
- A safe, stable country. Canada is a peaceful, politically stable, and safe country. We have laws that protect the rights of our citizens and our country is relatively unaffected by natural disasters. Almost 65 per cent of international students involved in a 1999 CBIE survey cited Canada's reputation as a safe country as an important reason for deciding to study here.
- Excellent health care. Compared to other countries, medical insurance is inexpensive in Canada yet the services that Canadian hospitals provide are among some of the most advanced and accessible in the world.
- Learn or improve another language! For over a century, Canada's two official languages (English and French) have been taught as second languages, which is why we are world leaders in language training. International students often choose to take language courses before beginning a regular academic program.
- A multicultural country. Canada is home to a large number of aboriginal people, called First Nations. Over the past century and a half, Canada has welcomed 15 million immigrants. Every year, some 200,000 new immigrants arrive here making Canada the nation that receives the most newcomers annually based on its population, which recently exceeded 31 million. Canada has a national policy for multiculturalism and works to ensure that people's customs and traditions are preserved and respected.
Basic necessities for a Study Permit:
All applicants wishing to study in Canada must satisfy an officer that they will leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for the stay, that they will not contravene the conditions of admission (for example, that they will not work without prior authorization or waiver) and that they do not belong in a category of persons inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
In reaching a decision, an officer will need to be satisfied that you:
- have a valid letter of acceptance from an educational institution
- have adequate funds available to you to pay for your tuition and living expenses while in Canada and to return to your country of residence
- are in good health
- are law-abiding and have no record of criminal activity
- will not be a risk to the security of Canada

TOEFL PBT scores are valid for two years from the administration date. During this period you can send your test score report to the institutions of your choice.
Internet-Based Test
The Internet-Based Test (iBT) assesses four basic language skills in, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.
More than 6,000 institutions and agencies in 110 countries rely on TOEFL scores to select students with the English skills needed to succeed.
Who should take the TOEFL test?
Nonnative English speakers at the 11th-grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency before beginning their academic work. The test content is considered too difficult for students below 11th grade.
Many institutions report that they frequently do not require TOEFL test scores of certain kinds of international applicants. These include:
- Nonnative speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand).
- Nonnative speakers who have successfully completed at least a two-year course of study in which English was the language of instruction
- Transfer students from institutions in the United States or Canada whose academic course work was favorably evaluated in relation to its demands and duration.
- Nonnative speakers who have taken the TOEFL PBT/CBT/iBT within the past two years
- Nonnative speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English-speaking country for a specified period, generally two years.
Students who are going particularly to the USA and Canada are advised to take this test. However, TOEFL is accepted by most institutions around the world. There are three versions of TOEFL tests and students can prepare and register for any version available as per their interest and availability of the test in test centers located within the country. Various banks in the capital assist students to perform an on-line registration. Visit the ETS website www.ets.org for more information on the test and to check for the test dates available in your preferred test center.
All our students have an opportunity of carrying out all their practice tests in the Self Access Lab. Every Sunday, teachers organize a test for the students on the computers in the lab so that they are well-acquainted with the test and build up confidence in taking their real test.

What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English test for foreign language users which tests the test takers’ proficiency in the four areas of English language: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking with a band score of 1 to 9 for each individual section.
There are two kinds of IELTS Preparation Courses: The Academic Training Module and The General Training. The Academic Training is for the candidates who wish to pursue their higher education overseas whereas the General Training is for immigration and training requirements abroad.
IELTS stands for English Language Proficiency test, mandatory for non-native students to get admissions abroad where the form of study is in English, especially UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. This even helps in getting the Australian student visa which is strictly prohibited for students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal etc. if they don't appear for the tests. TOEFL scores cannot act as substitute.
Executed each year by the British Council which even offer short courses for its preparations. These tests are held once a month. Altogether, there are nine Band levels, from one (non-user) to nine (expert user) which judge the performance of the student in English. Minimum score for a course ranges from 5.0 to 7.5. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is usually a requirement for admissions, scholarships or assistantships at a graduate school in most American universities. GRE scores are an admission requirement for Masters or doctoral programs in different fields other than the management. Good GRE scores are one of the decisive factors for both admissions scholarships at reputed American universities. It is a Computer Adaptive Test administered at USEF in Nepal. The test assesses student’s verbal, quantitative and analytical writing skills that are required for success at graduate level. The test has the following structure:
The GRE has the following format.
| Sections | Number of Questions | Kinds of Questions | Time |
| 1.Analytical Writing | 2 | 1. Perspective on an issue 2. Analysis of an argument | 45 minutes 30 minutes |
Break | |||
| 2. Verbal | 30 | 1. Sentence completion 6—7 questions 2. Reading comprehension (2-3 passages) 7-8 questions 3. Antonyms 8—9 questions 4. Analogies 7—8 questions | 30minutes |
| 3.Quantitative | 1. Multiple choice questions 2.Quantitative comparison (28 questions) | 45 minutes | |
An information bulletin for GRE can be collected from the USEF at Gyaneshwor. Students should register for the test online or by sending the application form and the test fee to the regional office of Sylvan Learning Centre in Malaysia. USEF in Nepal serves as a test center only.
The Academic Department at Eden conducts preparation sessions for GRE test takers. Three sections of GRE preparation course are facilitated by three different instructors who have been educated in the USA or have a deep understanding of writing expectations of American universities. The analytical writing section is conducted in the forms of workshops where students participate in group writing activities and receive both peer feedback and teacher’s comments so that they can improve their writing skills.
GMAT
Formulation of the test is in such a manner that it manages to churn out the best talent among the crowd by the sheer grueling testing criteria. Focusing primarily on fundamental skills as reasoning and comprehension, it omits any subject-specific theoretical study.
GMAT is unconventional in nature because of the arduous testing procedure. The test is sans any question paper or answer sheet & it varies for each candidate. It rather follows advanced software technology, i.e. the computer, for answering of the questions. In this four hour paper, one has to score a minimum of 500-600 out of a total of 800 marks to see the green light. Considered as the first major hurdle, GMAT test is just the first out of the several parameters to be met by the applicant for getting an entry into world-famous B-schools.
Administration of the GMAT
The US-based Pearson VUE under the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is the main body behind the GMAT development. The body is responsible for conducting tests at its various testing centers globally & dispatching of the results to the examinees.
Scheduling of the GMAT
GMAT is administered throughout the year. But September to December time gap is the best season for GMAT which means early registration of the students for acquiring the date & time choice preference. A minimum of 15 days in advance registration is mandatory.
Eligibility and Fees
Eligibility criteria are very flexible in age & educational aspect for aspirants. Test scores are considered valid for five years by most universities, though, recent scores as 2 years old are given more prominence. Similarly, fee structure for GMAT is US$250 worldwide and the students also have to pay taxes when scheduling exams in certain countries.
Modes of Payment
Students can pay the fee by:
- Credit card (as Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, JCB®)
- Debit card (as Visa® or MasterCard® only)
- Mailing Cashier's check
- Mailing money order
- Mailing personal check
GMAT Content and Format
The GMAT test has three distinct sections which are:
- Analytical Writing Ability (AWA), where two short essays are required to be written down within one hour. They are both analysis done on an issue & an argument respectively.
- Quantitative section deals with problem solving & data sufficiency question segments, 37 questions in totality. It basically deals with mathematical problems of class X level.
- Verbal segment is divided in three types dealing with sentence correction, critical reasoning, & reading comprehension with 41 queries to be answered.
Score Reporting
The student has the provision to report his scores to a maximum of five universities of his choice & the costs are met while paying the GMAT test fee itself. Though, he has to sincerely do the homework of zeroing in the final five prior to his exams which will ultimately receive his result copies. While reporting to additional university will mean extra charges which are US $28.
GMAT Scoring Pattern
There are four varied score patterns in GMAT test results which are:
Total score is measured on a scale from 200 to 800 while Verbal and Quantitative scores on 0 to 60 scale. AWA score is from 0 to 6 which do not appear in the total GMAT score (on 800). While the applicant gets to know his other results instantly after the test, the official GMAT score reports including the AWA scores are dispatched in mails after two weeks of the test, which reaches him after 10 days from the date of dispatch.
Retaking the GMAT
One can appear for GMAT more than once which can be due to any reason. Repetition can't be done in the same calendars month. The latest scores along with two other most recent test administrations (in last 5 years) are later reported to his choice of institutions.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is taken by most management students planning to pursue graduate study in the USA. Some universities in Germany, Japan, India and Canada also require GMAT scores of management students for admissions at Masters and doctoral levels. Similar to the GRE, this test also assesses three different skills of graduate students: verbal, quantitative and analytical writing. This test is administered at KCM, Satdobato but the test candidates should do either online registration or by sending completed application form and a bank draft for the test fee. For detailed information regarding test registration,
The GMAT has the following format
Sections | Number of Questions | Kinds of Questions | Time |
1. Analytical Writing | 2 | 1. Analysis of an Issue 2. Analysis of an Argument | 30 minutes30 minutes |
Break | |||
2. Verbal | 41 | 1. Sentence Correction 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Critical Reasoning | 75 minutes |
3. Math | 37 | 1. Multiple choice questions 2. Data sufficiency | 75 minutes |

Active
Teaching Training
How
to teach more effectively and make learning fun for students!
Did
you know…
We remember 10% of what we read
We remember 20% of what we hear
We remember 30% of what we see
We remember 90% of what we SAY and DO!
Most teachers let students
read the textbook, explain and use teaching materials. But when using more
Active Teaching methods, students will find it much easier to remember and
understand.
That’s why we introduce
the concept of Active Teaching in Nepal. In this training, we practice with
various new teaching methods, simple and ready to use in your classroom.
Our
training:
We provide practical
training for teachers in Primary, Lower Secondary and Secondary level. We do
not teach subjects, but give teachers tools to improve their teaching skills.
During training, the trainer uses different Active Teaching methods, so
teachers can experience the benefits of Active Teaching. We will practice with
group work, discussion techniques, lesson planning and the use of teaching materials.
Primary
School teachers:
For Primary School
teachers, the training is very practical. We give an overview of Active
Teaching methods and discuss the importance of lesson planning. We provide
lesson plans for different subjects and classes. We make an individual plan
with each teacher for one subject in one class. During the school visits,
teachers prepare an active lesson. The trainer observes and gives feedback.
After training, teachers have experience in using different Active Teaching methods
in the classroom.
Secondary
School teachers
For Lower Secondary and
Secondary School teachers, we put more emphasis on the theoretical basis. Why
do we want to use Active Teaching methods? How can we apply Active Teaching in
the classroom? What techniques can be used to prepare students for exams?
Teachers will practice making lesson plans using Active Teaching methods and
discuss this in a group. During school visits, teachers show a planning they
made for several active lessons for one class. The trainer observes lessons and
gives feedback. After the training teachers are aware of the importance of
lesson planning. They know how to use different Active Teaching methods and
have experience in using these methods in their class.
Trainer:
The training is conducted
by Silke Vroegop, MA in Educational Psychology and teaching Social Science.
Silke is from the Netherlands and has been working in teacher training in Nepal
for the last several years.
Content
of the training:
- Before
training, we visit the school and perform a needs assessment
- We
provide several days of training in our Training Centre, suited to your
time availability (10 hours)

A short history of the origins and development of English
The history of the English language really started with the
arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD.
These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from
what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of
Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed
west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and
Ireland. The Angles came from Englaland and their language was called Englisc -
from which the words England and English are derived.
Old
English (450-1100 AD)
The invading Germanic tribes
spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old
English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English
speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Nevertheless,
about half of the most commonly used words in Modern English have Old English
roots. The words be, strong and water, for example, derive
from Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100
Middle English (1100-1500)
In 1066 William the Conqueror,
the Duke of Normandy (part of modern France), invaded and conquered England.
The new conquerors (called the Normans) brought with them a kind of French,
which became the language of the Royal Court, and the ruling and business
classes. For a period there was a kind of linguistic class division, where the
lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th
century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words
added. This language is called Middle English. It was the language of the great
poet Chaucer (c1340-1400), but it would still be difficult for native English
speakers to understand today.
Modern English
Early Modern English (1500-1800)
Towards the end of Middle English, a sudden and distinct change in pronunciation (the Great Vowel Shift) started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact with many people’s from around the world. This, and the Renaissance of Classical learning, meant that many new words and phrases entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was now a common language in print. Books became cheaper and more people learned to read. Printing also brought standardization to English. Spelling and grammar became fixed, and the dialect of London, where most publishing houses were, became the standard. In 1604 the first English dictionary was published.
Late Modern English (1800-Present)
The main difference between Early Modern English and Late Modern English is vocabulary. Late Modern English has many more words, arising from two principal factors: firstly, the Industrial Revolution and technology created a need for new words; secondly, the British Empire at its height covered one quarter of the earth's surface, and the English language adopted foreign words from many countries.
Varieties of English
From around 1600, the English colonization of North America resulted in the creation of a distinct American variety of English. Some English pronunciations and words "froze" when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English is. Some expressions that the British call "Americanisms" are in fact original British expressions that were preserved in the colonies while lost for a time in Britain (for example trash for rubbish, loan as a verb instead of lend, and fall for autumn; another example, frame-up, was re-imported into Britain through Hollywood gangster movies). Spanish also had an influence on American English (and subsequently British English), with words like canyon, ranch, stampede and vigilante being examples of Spanish words that entered English through the settlement of the American West. French words (through Louisiana) and West African words (through the slave trade) also influenced American English (and so, to an extent, British English).
Today, American English is particularly influential, due to the USA's dominance of cinema, television, popular music, trade and technology (including the Internet). But there are many other varieties of English around the world, including for example Australian English, New Zealand English, Canadian English, South African English, Indian English and Caribbean English.
Japanese
History of Japanese Language
One
of the biggest difficulties of the Japanese language is its complex writing system.
Unless you are already familiar with Chinese characters
(kanji), many years of study are necessary to achieve complete literacy.
Japanese students learn about 2000 kanji until the end of junior high school
and continue to learn more until the end of their school careers.
The two syllabus Hiragana
and Katakana
(together about 100 signs), however, can be memorized within a short period of
time.
Japanese is a relative of other Asian languages. This theory
maintains that Japanese split from - or had large influences from - other East
Asian languages such as Korean (and possibly the Sino-Tibetan languages).
Japanese is a relative of the Altaic language family. Other
languages in this group include Mongolian, Tungusic, Turkish, and sometimes,
Korean. Evidence for this theory lies in the fact that like Turkish and Korean,
Japanese is an agglutinative language. Japanese also has (phonologically
distinctive) pitch (called pitch accent in linguistics), similar to
Serbian/Croatian. Additionally, there are a suggestive number of apparently
regular correspondences in basic vocabulary, such as ishi "stone" to
Turkic das, yo "four" to Turkic dört.
Japanese is a kind of Creole, with an Altaic grammatical
substructure, and core Austronesian vocabulary.
Japanese is related to southern Asian languages. Some researchers
have suggested a possible relationship between Japanese and Tamil, a member of
the Dravidian language family spoken in southern India.
The Meanings of
Japanese Names
Most Japanese names
are written in kanji, though some names are written in hiragana
or katakana. Hiragana are mainly used for girl's name because of its soft
impression. Since there are thousands of kanji to choose from, even the same
name usually can be written in many different kanji combinations.
For example, "Keiko" is a common female name.
"Ko"
is often used for the end of female names, and it means "a
child". However, there are more than 70 variations that exist to
write the name "Keiko" in kanji. Depending which characters are used
the meanings differ.
School System
The Japanese
educational system was reformed after World War II. The old 6-5-3-3 system was
changed to a 6-3-3-4 system (6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior
high school, 3 years of senior high school and 4 years of University) with
reference to the American system. Gimukyoiku (compulsory education) time period
is 9 years, 6 in shougakkou (elementary school) and 3 in chuugakkou (junior
high school).
Japan has one of the
world's best-educated populations, with 100% enrollment in compulsory grades
and zero illiteracy. While not compulsory, high school (koukou) enrollment is
over 96% nationwide and nearly 100% in the cities. High school drop out rate is
about 2% and has been increasing. About 46% of all high school graduates go on to
university or junior college.
Student Life
Most schools operate
on a three-term system with the New Year starting in April. The modern
educational system started in 1872 modeled after the French school system which
began in April. The fiscal year in Japan also begins in April and ends in March
of the following year; it is more convenient in many aspects. April is the
height of spring when cherry blossom (the most loved flower of the Japanese!)
bloom and a most suitable time for a new start in Japan. This difference in the
school-year system causes some inconvenience to students who wish to study
abroad in the U.S. A half year is wasted waiting to get in and often another
year is wasted when coming back to the Japanese university because of having to
repeat a year.
Except for the lower
grades of elementary school, it is usual to average 6 hours of school a day on
weekdays, one of the longest school days in the world. Even after school lets
out, the children have drills and other homework to keep them busy. Vacations
are 6 weeks in the summer and about 2 weeks each for winter and spring breaks.
There is often homework over these vacations.
Every class has its
own fixed classroom where its students take all the courses, except for
practical trainings and laboratory works. During elementary education, in most
cases, one teacher teaches all the subjects in each class. Because of the rapid
population growth after World War II, the numbers of students in a typical
elementary and junior high schools once exceeded 50, but now it is kept under
40. At public elementary and junior high school, school lunch (kyuushoku) is
provided on a standardized menu, and it is eaten in the same classroom. Nearly
all junior high schools require their students to wear the school uniforms
(seifuku).
A great difference
between Japanese school system and American School system is, the American
respects independence and the Japanese control individual responsibility by
observing the group rules. This explains the Japanese characteristic of group
behavior.
German
About
German Language
German
is one of the large groups of Indo-Germanic languages, and within this group is
one of the Germanic languages, related to Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, Dutch,
as well as to English.
At the end of the middle Ages there were a
large number of regional written languages. Welcome to our site for learning
the German language and exploring the cultures of the German-speaking
countries. We offer many resources and links to help you learn both the
language and the culture.
What
many people don't know is that actually German is the language most similar to
English - more than any other language. This is due to the fact that English
and German both belong to the same family of languages: The Germanic Languages.
In Europe 3 language families dominate Germanic, Romanic and Slavic.
A
fascinating fact is that in Northern Germany - which is closest to England -
the dialect versions of many words become very similar to English. German is
used as the official language of Germany and of Austria. Historically, German
falls into three main periods: Old German (c. 750—c. 1050); Middle German
(c.1050—c.1500); and Modern German (c.1500 to the present). The earliest
existing records in German date back to about 750. In this first period, local
dialects were used in writing, and there was no standard language. In the
middle period a relatively uniform written language developed in government
after the various chancelleries of the Holy Roman Empire began, in the 14th
cent., to use a combination of certain dialects of Middle High German in place
of the Latin that until then had dominated official writings.
Learning German in Germany. Germany - romantic
landscapes, enchanting castles, cosmopolitan cities, colorful festivals and
friendly people. A land where history and culture come alive and whose complex
past has made it the extraordinary country it is today.
German Has
3 Genders
3 Genders?
Male, female and what?
Yes, what
does not occur in nature can happen in German, all things that you see have a
specific gender. However, in German there is a third gender called
"neuter" - meaning something neutral - neither male nor female. So
there are three articles:
A funny example is
knife, for
* knife - neuter ("das Messer")
* fork - female ("die Gabel")k
and spoon. There you have them all:
* spoon - male ("der Löffel")
While German is of
course spoken by around 80 million people living in Germany, there are many
more countries where German is spoken by either a majority of a minority.
Austria with it 10 million inhabitants speaks German. Switzerland has German as
one of four official languages (along with French, Italian and Romansh). In
Northern Italy - in the part famous for its skiing areas German is spoken -
beside Italian being the official language. In the east-most part of Belgium
people speak German - while the major part of the country is French-speaking.

Au-pair
What is an Au-Pair?
Traditionally, Au-Pairs are foreign students who work for families in exchange for room, board, pocket money and practicing their English. Now however we offer not only Au-Pair for children but Au-Pairs for seniors. This is an Au-Pair who would have much the same duties as an Au-Pair for children however; in this case they would provide companionship for an elderly person or children. It is a non-medical, in-home care option for seniors, who need assistance with daily living.
We are an agency that provides assistance, companionship and informal care and help. Our objective is to provide an affordable alternative to very expensive alternatives. This service is best suited for people who have less acute needs and do not require specialist care and would rather remain in their own home than taking up permanent residence in a residential or nursing home.
We have specialization in live too in care only however if you have any other requirements please let us know and we will try our best to accommodate you.
Au-Pair in Germany
In Germany exists an Au-Pair program for young people aged from 18 to 25 years.
Duration of stay:
An Au-Pair may work in Germany 12 months at the longest. People who already worked in Germany as an Au-Pair may not work as an Au-Pair in Germany again, no matter how long their first stay was.
Language skills:
Au-Pair must have basic knowledge of the German language. The German embassies must decide about whether the Au-Pair's language skills are sufficient. There is no common rule about how much knowledge you need to have to be acknowledged.
Conditions for host families:
Families with at least 1 child younger than 18 may be host families. Single parents may host an Au-Pair too. One parent must have the German nationality. In exceptional cases a family with no German nationals among the parents may be a host family if German is mainly spoken within the family.
Families with 4 or more children may host 2 Au-Pairs at the same time.
Child care/house work:
30 hour of help with child care and house work per week, including 1-2 evenings of babysitting.
Help with house work does not include:
- Independent management of the whole household by the Au-Pair,
- Ironing of complicated clothes (such as shirts or blouses),
- spring cleaning,
- doing the whole cooking for the family alone,
- doing the whole washing for the whole family,
- the washing of the family's underwear is not the task of an Au-Pair as well as the cleaning of the toilet unless it is exclusively used by the Au-Pair.
You will need to explain your house rules and her/his duties to the Au-Pair in a clear manner. Remember to pay her/his pocket money on time and try to make your arrangements in plenty of time if you need your Au-Pair to stay in with you. If there are house rules in place (smoking, overnight/daytime visitors etc) please make sure to discuss and agree them with your Au-Pair.
What the family should provide for the Au Pair!
| A Private Room (a friendly comfortable room is important) to include TV, stereo, desk with lamp for study purposes, Closet/Wardrobe storage space for clothing and personal items. | |
| Full board and accommodation for 7 days per week | |

Au Pair’s function with the family in the home:
| The Au-Pair is to share the life of the receiving family, while at the same time enjoy a certain degree of independence. | |
| Keep in mind there is always an adjustment time when engaging an Au-Pair. Try to be patient and supportive, remember the Au Pair is in unfamiliar surroundings and with new people. | |
| Be very specific about the Au-Pairs duties & schedules. (Make a list to avoid problems, discuss exactly what you would be asking of the Au-Pair before she arrives and make sure the Au-Pair has a detailed timetable every week). | |
| Au Pairs are expected to baby-sit weekly (depending on their hours and package), should never be asked to baby-sit on their free days. | |
| It is important to remember that the majority of Au-Pairs do not have any formal childcare training, and are not in the same category as Nannies or Nursery Nurses. | |
| It is important that the Au-Pair should be treated as part of your family, share the meals with the family, and be invited to share in their activity pursuits whenever possible. |

The host family has to take out health insurance and a third party insurance for the Au-Pair (the costs amount to approximately € 23 to 40 per month). If the an Au-Pair needs a visa, we recommend adjusting the Au-Pair insurance contract to cover potential expulsion costs.
Travel costs:
The Au-Pair must bear the travel costs herself/himself. Please make no advance payments. If you as a host family want to bear a part of the costs, please do this after a successful stay of the Au-Pair of at least 50% of the stipulated time.
Accommodation:
An Au-Pair should have his/her own warm room which has a window and can be locked; at least 8 sq.m. The Au-Pair can take part in the family life and in the common meals.
Pocket money:
€ 260 per month
The Au-Pair also gets the pocket money during his or her holidays and in case of illness.
Holidays:
The Au-Pair is entitled to 2 days of paid holiday per month.
Spare time:

What does the host family expect of their Au-Pair?
Usually an Au-Pair in Germany is required to work up to 30 hours per week, usually not more than 5 hours per day. If theAu-Pair is being asked to work extra hours, the host family is obliged to compensate her with proportionate leisure time. The host parents may ask their au pair for additional baby-sitting up to 3 times per week. The host family will provide the au pair with a daily schedule of their duties and time off. As the host family expects the Au-Pair to be a real help and support in managing their daily routine, flexibility is very important.
What can Au-Pairs expect from their host families?
- Being accepted as a family member for the duration of your stay, and your own private room - your host family invites you to take part in their daily life including all meals.

How we select the Au-Pairs?
We take special care in selecting our Au-Pairs as we realize that the most important thing to consider is your family and especially your children. We have international partners in Germany to select our au pairs by interviewing them in person. However please note the onus to check and vet the Au-Pair is on the family. What the family should pay for Au-Pairs are responsible for paying their own tuition fees, bus/train tickets, mobile phone cards, medical insurance/expenses and airfare. A contribution is sometimes made by the family however please note this is at the family’s discretion only. Establishing a good relationship with your Au-Pair. Please keep in mind that your au pair may feel a little homesick at first and will need time to get used to your family and to being in a strange country. During this period, you will need to be as understanding and patient as possible and make her/him feel at home.
Accommodating someone from outside the family in your home is always a bit difficult at first, particularly if that someone is technically your employee, and some tension may occur. If things don’t go smoothly at the beginning, we advise our families to give au pairs some time to adjust. After all, they are trying to adapt to a totally new culture and to using a foreign language. The agency is here to support both the families and Au-Pairs so please feel free to contact us with any questions or with anything we may be able to help with. Your Au-Pair's understanding of Dutch might be poor at first, but it will soon improve. She/he is in Germany to learn the language and your attempts at making conversation with your au pair will be appreciate.
How to apply?
| It is standard procedure that the agency visits all potential families. We will need to see the Au-Pair’s room and make sure that she has adequate facilities for studying etc… |
| When the agency visits your house we will bring along one or more files for you to take a look at and chose an Au-Pair. |
| Once you have chosen your Au-Pair we will send off your details to the Au-Pair and she will get in touch with you usually by phone. |
| It is advisable to have a few questions ready to ask the Au-Pair. The more information you can give her over the phone the smoother things will run when she gets here as she will know what to expect. If both of you are happy she will then agree dates of arrival with you. |
| Once the dates have been confirmed you then call the office to make an appointment to have the Au-Pair take a level test and sign an agreement form. |
| After you have met your Au-Pair at the airport you can either bring her directly to us to sign an agreement form and do the test, or wait for a day or two after she has arrived. |
If you are thinking of hosting an Au-Pair please advised of the following:
| We have many families on our books already. There families are our priority when it comes to placing the Au-Pairs we have. So there will be certain times of the year where we will need to put new families on a waiting list. |
It is the family’s responsibility to check in with the agency as often as possible when looking for an Au-Pair.
| All Au-Pairs must attend classes at least twice a week two evenings per week. |
Placement fees are non-refundable however a replacement an Au-Pair will be provided.
Terms and conditions to having an Au-Pair:
Families must agree to:
| Allow Au-Pairs to come to classes and report to the agency if Au-Pairs are not willing to attend. | |
| Sign our agreement form within one week of the Au-Pair arriving. | |
| Attire to the guidelines outlined on the agreement form. | |
| It is important to remember that this is not an Employer-employee relationship, but a cultural and language exchange based on mutual goodwill and respect. | |
| Give the required notice if an Au-Pair is not suited to your family. | |
| Placement fees must be paid on time. | |
| Placement fees do not need to be paid until the Au-Pair has been chosen and confirmed. An admin fee of €45 will be charged for late payments. | |
| The onus is on the family to check references and other related documents of the Au-Pair they are choosing. Eden works with many different agencies abroad but we can not vet all of the Au-Pairs. |
Au-Pairs will not be able to start classes until the agreement form has been completed at the school by both the Au-Pair and the family.
Eden provides outings and excursions for all Au-Pairs. We encourage the Au-Pairs to take part once a month.
We cannot guarantee that all information we gathered is correct or complete even though we have researched on this subject. If you are thinking about hosting an Au-Pair, please contact us at EEC as soon as possible.
